What is an eBook?

An eBook (short for electronic book) is a publication in digital form that can be read on computers and electronic devices. It can contain text, pictures, audio, and even video. They can be read on a wide variety of devices, from dedicated e-readers, to smart phones, to home computers.

Compared with printed books, Veloce eBooks have two main advantages: accessibility and convenience. E-reader devices are typically smaller than printed books, so can be easier to carry around with you. You can also make the text larger or smaller, and many devices allow you to magnify images, or search for specific words or phrases.

The convenience of having all your books available on a single device is a big advantage, and with a compact e-reader you can have access to our full range of eBooks on a device that easily fits in a toolbox or glovebox.

Many people purchase eBooks as a supplement to the original printed version. If an eBook also has a printed version, you'll see one or more of the following banners on the eBook page.

Clicking one of the above banners will take you to the Veloce website, where you can purchase the printed version of the book.

What do I need to be able to read an eBook?

Our eBooks can be read on a dedicated e-reader, a smart phone, or your PC or Mac.

The most popular method, is reading on an 'E-ink' device. These have special, matt-surface screens that mimic paper. They can only display shades of grey, but are very lightweight, easy-to-view, and generally have long battery lives. Examples of such devices are the Amazon Kindle range, Kobo e-readers, the Nook Book, and the Sony Reader.

There are also versions of Kindle, Kobo and Nook devices with colour screens. These are effectively touchscreen mobile computers, with a 7-10in screen, and are capable of playing music, high-definition video, and can run 'apps.' They offer all the main functionality of a tablet computer, such as web browsing and email, but focus on eBook reading, and on their particular vendor's eBook store.

iOS, Android and Windows mobile devices are also popular ways to access eBooks – for instance, tablets such as the Apple iPad, Google Nexus, Microsoft Surface, or Samsung Galaxy Tab. These offer all the features of the colour e-readers mentioned above, but offer a more general tablet experience, rather than focussing on e-reading.

Smart phones also make good e-reading devices, with many people using Apple iPhones, Android Smartphones, or Windows Phones as a daily e-reader.

Finally, you can use your PC or Mac home computer to read eBooks, and e-reading software can be downloaded for Windows, Mac, and Linux systems. Some eBook vendors even give you the option of reading eBooks in a web browser, giving anyone with access to a computer the ability to buy and enjoy eBooks from Veloce.

What are 'standard' and 'fixed layout' eBooks?

We create two main types of eBook: standard and fixed layout. Standard eBooks are sold through all of our vendors, and have a 'flowing' layout' – ie, the content will automatically adjust and 'flow' to suit your device and the size of text you choose (smaller text = fewer pages, larger text = more pages). Standard layout eBooks bought from the iBookstore and Google play may contain videos, and all of our eBooks contain fonts and styling that have been chosen to give the best reading experience possible, with pleasing, functional design.

Amazon uses its own proprietary format for its Kindle store: these books still 'flow,' but will look slightly different than other vendor's eBooks. Also, whilst Kindle's E-ink devices 'understand' the size, colour, and text alignment of our eBook designs, they always use their own built-in font. However, they are still very responsive and allow you to zoom images within an eBook.

Fixed layouts differ considerably from standard layouts. These are more akin to traditional books: you cannot adjust the size of the text, and they do not flow. Reading a fixed layout eBook is like reading a traditional book. Fixed layouts are often used for books that don't lend themselves to, or can't be created with, standard layouts – books with complex or highly visual designs, for instance. Fixed layout eBooks can currently only be purchased from the iBookstore, Kobo store (except Kobo E-ink), and Google play.

Fixed layout eBooks are denoted by a special icon.

What is DRM?

DRM is an abbreviation of Digital Rights Management, a method that 'locks' an eBook to a device or user account to prevent unauthorised copying or distribution. All of our eBooks currently use DRM, meaning that eBooks you purchase from us can only be read by you, on your devices.

Apple and Kindle uses its own DRM format, specific to its devices. eBooks from Kobo and Nook use a 'standard' DRM system, but are linked to your e-reader or app, so you never need to worry about the DRM side of things.

Our other vendors use Adobe DRM, so you'll need to use an e-reader, app, or software that supports Adobe DRM on you computer to view them. Adobe DRM is an industry standard, so there's a large range of options available to you. Click here to see Adobe's list of supported devices.

Setting up your device and software is very easy, and instructions on how to do this are given by each vendor. Most will suggest using Adobe Digital Editions, an e-reading application that also manages your eBook collection and sends titles to your device. Below is a list of Adobe DRM supporting apps that we recommend:

Adobe Digital Editions – PC and Mac
Official Adobe software, can read your eBooks on your computer and transfer them to a large array of devices including Kobo and Nook.

Sony Reader Library – PC and Mac
Well-presented of e-reading software for your computer that supports Adobe DRM. Can also transfer eBooks to Sony devices if needed.

Mantano e-reading App – Android
Our eBook editor's favourite eBook app. Supports Adobe DRM, has options to arrange your books in collections, and also supports PDFs.

Bluefire Reader – Android and iOS
This app supports Adobe DRM and rich text formatting. A very pleasant e-reading experience on your phone or tablet.
